Mechanical engineering is one of the foundational branches of engineering. It involves application of the physical principles to analyze, design and manufacture systems ranging from small devices such as coronary stents (or other such biomedical implants) to large and complex machines/systems such as rockets and spacecraft. A mechanical engineer, hence, is required to understand the forces and energy that a system and or its components has to transmit or withstand, design them for their functionality and determine the materials to be used and the best way to manufacture. Since everything that has to be “made” involves the above process, Mechanical engineering is perhaps the broadest field that touches human lives.

Mechanical engineering deals with sub specializations such as fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, manufacturing processes, material science, heat transfer, control systems, instrumentation, rapid prototyping, composite materials, nano materials, aerodynamics, combustion, automobiles, vibration, robotics, MEMS, Energy conversion (Solar, Wind and Nuclear energy, Fuel Cells), Environmental Control (air conditioning and refrigeration), bio-mechanics and biotechnology, modeling and simulation. Since it is a diverse branch of engineering, mechanical engineers are found virtually in every kind of industry. .

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sree Chaitanya College of engineering was established in the year 2009 with an initial intake of 60 students and an additional section of 60 is added in 2011. The department also offers PG program with specialization in Design for Manufacturing and Thermal Engineering. The department continuously strives to achieve excellence in education, research as well as consultancy work with service to the society. The department has excellent infrastructure facilities with modern labs and workshop. The department has dynamic and well experienced faculty and are supported by dedicated technical staff. Majority of the faculty hold post graduate degrees in their areas of specialization from reputed institutes and have passion for teaching and motivation for research. .

We at mechanical engineering department constantly encourage our students to engage in practical experiments, project work, industrial training, seminars, etc. to enhance their learning process that is so vital for a holistic engineering education. We take pride in that fact that our students have participated in numerous workshops -- Robotics, Vehicle Dynamics etc., to name a few -- and have designed and built a Go-kart to participate in Go-Kart championships. The efforts put by the students along with the encouragement provided by the faculty helps to realize our mission of equipping our students with a strong foundation in technical knowledge.
